What is your overtime really worth?

A person arriving at a home office with a bag beside a laptop and navy coffee cup.

People turn down shifts because they have heard the extra money is taxed away. It is not. Extra hours are taxed at the rate for the dollars they sit on top of, which is higher than your usual rate but nowhere near all of it. Take 8 hours at time and a half on $25.00 an hour. In California that is $223.05 in your pocket, or $27.88 for every hour you stayed.

Overtime is ordinary wage income; there is no separate overtime tax. It is taxed at the marginal rate applying to the dollars it occupies, and the confusion comes from employers withholding supplemental pay at a flat rate, which is reconciled at filing rather than being the final liability. Computed by running the full stack at both incomes and differencing: at $25.00/hour, 8 hours at time and a half yields $223.05 net in California against a gross of $300.00.
