What does it ring up at?

A cashier hands a printed receipt to a shopper at a store checkout counter.

Most calculators ask you for the tax rate. This one already knows it. Pick your state and what you are buying, and it uses the real rate for that county. Food and medicine are treated differently from other things in a lot of states, and that changes the answer more than the rate does.

We apply the selected location's state and local rates, category exemptions, special food rates and per-item clothing caps. A state-level exemption may leave local tax in place. The reverse mode uses the same rule and reports when no whole-cent item price could have produced the entered total.

The general rate applies here: 10.25%, state and local combined. “Statewide average” is a comparison estimate. Named locations use the stored local rate; city and special-district coverage varies, so an address may differ. Rate source · as of 2026-10-01.

Every state, and what it spares

Each row names the location behind its rates. Some are statewide averages; others are named counties or cities. Groceries use that location's food rate. Clothing is one item priced at one hundred dollars, because a price cap can change its tax. Your address may differ.

The combined figure uses the first stored location for each state, identified in its row. Grocery rates include state-only exemptions and flat category rates. Clothing treatment is measured on one item priced at one hundred dollars, including local elections and price caps. The summary counts use these same locations; city and district coverage varies.
