Gas tax by state

Fuel tax is the one most people pay every week and never see. It is not added at the till. It is already inside the price on the sign, which is why almost nobody knows what their state charges. Below is what it comes to on a tank, and across a year of driving, in every state. Federal tax is charged on top and is the same everywhere.
State motor fuel excise, expressed as the amount levied on a twenty-gallon purchase and across five hundred gallons annually. ⚠️ Federal excise is excluded throughout: it is uniform nationally, so including it would raise every figure by the same amount and compress the interstate variation this table exists to show. Rates are levied per gallon rather than ad valorem, so their real value erodes with inflation unless indexed — which is the structural reason states revisit them and the reason a table like this dates quickly.
