How much does food delivery actually cost once every fee is counted?

Delivery is the most fee-stacked purchase in ordinary American life — four separate charges before tax.

A delivered meal carries costs in a specific order, and each one is calculated on the one before it. The menu price in the app is typically marked up above what the restaurant charges at its own counter. A service fee is then taken as a percentage of that marked-up subtotal. A flat delivery fee is added. Sales tax applies to prepared food at the full rate in almost every state — including several that exempt groceries entirely, which is why cooking the same ingredients is taxed differently from having them delivered. Then the tip. The result is routinely double the menu price before you have earned a cent of it.

Platforms commonly list dishes above the restaurant's own dine-in price. 15% is a widely reported midpoint; set to 0 if your restaurant prices identically in-app.

Assumptions

  • Menu markup, service fee and delivery fee vary by platform, city and restaurant, and change frequently. The defaults are widely-reported midpoints, not a specific platform's published rates — treat them as a starting point and edit them to match your own receipt.
  • Prepared food is taxed at the STANDARD rate in nearly every state, including states that exempt groceries entirely — which is why the same ingredients are taxed differently depending on who cooked them.
  • Subscription programmes that waive delivery fees are not modeled. Set the delivery fee to 0 if you pay one, and remember the subscription itself is a separate recurring cost.

Prices and wages are held at today's levels, and the return above is inflation-adjusted to match — consistent by design. The invested-instead line assumes the cash is contributed at the end of each year and left alone; it is an alternative use of the same money, never an extra cost on top.

Your position in the tax system

29.65% on the next dollar

Every extra dollar you earn is taxed at your marginal rate, not your average one — which is why a purchase costs more to fund than a paycheck stub suggests.

Marginal rates are read in gross-income terms: below the standard deduction an extra dollar of pay adds nothing to taxable income, so the true rate there is 0%, not the lowest bracket's. Excludes pre-tax deductions (401(k), HSA), which would lower all three.

Each tax layer is the extra tax this purchase causes — that layer's tax at your income subtracted from its tax at your income plus the gross-up — so bracket boundaries the purchase straddles are handled correctly rather than smoothed over with an average rate.

Federal, FICA, state and any local income tax — no pre-tax deductions, benefit changes, or payroll withholding quirks, all of which move the real figure. Moving into a higher bracket never taxes the income below the threshold: only the dollars above it pay the higher rate.
