In some cities the ticket carries two taxes, not one.

The ticket is taxed twice in some cities, and only one of those taxes is the state's.

Tickets are taxable in most states, so you pay the normal sales tax on the seat. Then there's a second one people rarely hear about. Cities can charge their own amusement tax on top, and cinema tickets are exactly what it's aimed at. Two tickets at the same price, in two cities in the same state, can cost different amounts. Nothing about the state rate would tell you that. The booking fee usually gets taxed as well.

Admissions are taxable in most states, so a cinema ticket generally carries ordinary sales tax. What makes this category unusual is the second layer: amusement and admissions taxes are a classic municipal levy, charged by the city rather than the state, and they land on exactly this kind of purchase. A reader comparing two tickets at the same face price in two cities of the same state can pay different totals for reasons no statewide figure will explain. The booking fee, where charged, is generally taxable too.

Assumptions

  • We use your state's normal sales tax rate, which is how most states treat tickets.
  • City amusement taxes aren't counted. If your city charges one, the real cost is higher.
  • Popcorn and drinks are taxed as prepared food and aren't included here.
  • Modeled at your state's standard sales tax rate, which is the usual treatment for admissions.
  • Municipal amusement and admissions taxes are not modeled. Where a city levies one, the real cost is higher than shown.
  • Concessions are taxed as prepared food and are not included in this figure.

Your position in the tax system

29.65% on the next dollar

Every extra dollar you earn is taxed at your marginal rate, not your average one — which is why a purchase costs more to fund than a paycheck stub suggests.

Marginal rates are read in gross-income terms: below the standard deduction an extra dollar of pay adds nothing to taxable income, so the true rate there is 0%, not the lowest bracket's. Excludes pre-tax deductions (401(k), HSA), which would lower all three.

Each tax layer is the extra tax this purchase causes — that layer's tax at your income subtracted from its tax at your income plus the gross-up — so bracket boundaries the purchase straddles are handled correctly rather than smoothed over with an average rate.

Is a raise actually a raise?

you keep 70%

A raise arrives on top of everything you already earn, so it is taxed at your marginal rate — not the average rate on your whole salary.

Federal, FICA, state and any local income tax — no pre-tax deductions, benefit changes, or payroll withholding quirks, all of which move the real figure. Moving into a higher bracket never taxes the income below the threshold: only the dollars above it pay the higher rate.

Questions people ask

Why does a small regular cost need such a big salary behind it?

Because you pay it out of what is left, and what is left is the small end of your salary. Every dollar spent on this has already been through income tax and payroll tax, so a cost that repeats has to be earned again and again at the gross rate — not the net one.

Does this cost the same in every state?

No — the tax on it is set state by state, and this figure follows whichever one you pick. Some states exempt this category outright, some tax it at a reduced rate, and some apply the full rate, so the same purchase can land in three different places.

Why is the total more than the price I was quoted?

The quoted price is not the amount that leaves. Fees are added on the way through — not tax, not optional, and included here for that reason.

What does this figure leave out?

Specific things, named below rather than glossed over. Where the real rule has an edge this model does not follow, the note says so, so you can judge whether your purchase falls inside it.

Why does a recurring outlay require disproportionate gross income?

Consumption is funded from post-tax income, so required gross income is the outlay divided by one minus the marginal rate on the relevant income slice. For a recurring cost that grossed-up figure recurs at the same cadence, which is why annualised gross requirement exceeds the nominal annual outlay by the full marginal wedge.

How does state tax treatment vary for this purchase?

Sales tax treatment of this category is determined at state level, with local add-ons layered on top where they exist. Classification varies between full exemption, a reduced grocery-style rate and the standard rate, so aggregate burden is not comparable across states without specifying the jurisdiction.

What non-tax charges are included in this total?

The total includes mandatory non-tax charges levied by the seller or an intermediary. These are not remitted to a taxing authority and are not deductible as tax, but they are a condition of the transaction, so excluding them would understate the cash outlay while appearing exact.

What are the stated limits of this category's model?

Modeling limits for this category are stated explicitly on the page rather than inferred. They typically concern classification edge cases, per-item caps, or local levies outside the modeled base. Where a limit applies to a reader's specific purchase, the figure should be treated as a lower or upper bound as the note describes.
